I am a parent/teacher asking for a child
I want to give you a set of skills that will enable you to deal with situations you previously are unable to start because of anxiety. I want to help you understand that fear of mathematics is very often rooted in negative experiences and when you feel stupid or "can't do", that is very often a panic response. Learning to calm your nervous system can help you to move from being stuck or avoidant to growth.
All people engaging in our coaching are treated with unconditional positive regard and the belief that they can grow if they choose and if the adverse prior experiences are addressed.
Under 18's are treated with respect and autonomy to take control of their learning.
Children might want to be accompanied by a trusted adult.
We can also offer coaching for parents to help with this process. Helping parents to develop a "can do if..." attitude to maths rather than "I can't..." is important because these beliefs and responses are contagious.
For adults who say "I can't do maths"
"But I can't do maths" - is something we hear often. I always respond, "what happened to you in maths".
I hear story after story of the experiences that have left people with a belief that they are incapable in mathematics.
In reality, the amygdala in their brain is seeking to keep them safe by avoiding the threatening situation. Coaching can help to reframe the problem from "can't do" to "temporary panic". Learning how to address that panic helps people get back to their personal growth zone, a feeling of "I can try".
